How to Look After Your Dog’s Health

Around 65 million US families choose to share their homes with a pet, and if you are one of them, you will already know the deep bond that forms between us humans and our furry friends. However, this in turn, leads to distress as we tend to outlive our fur babies by decades.

It is estimated that around 6 million dogs will be diagnosed with cancer in the US each year, and these figures look to be rising. Poor diets consisting of processed foods and inadequate nutrition, along with exposure to environmental toxins has been blamed. But how do you ensure that you provide your canine friend with the best possible care so they are able to resist modern illnesses?

Provide the Best Possible Diet

As the raw food debate rages on among the population, it is up to you to research and decide on whether raw food diets represent an ideal meal plan for your pooch, or whether it is instead a dangerous fad. There is no doubt that raw diets are rising in popularity and that they have been used for racing greyhounds and sled dogs for generations.

The raw diet is essentially based around raw, meaty bones and vegetable scraps. Supporters of the diet claim that raw dog food recipes lead to shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth, higher energy levels, smaller stools, fresher breath and better smelling pets. However, on the flip side of the coin, experts claim that it poses a threat to both dogs and humans due to the bacteria in raw meat and that an unbalanced diet can damage dog health over time. There is, of course, also the potential for dogs to choke on raw bones, break their teeth or even experience an internal puncture.

However, whether you choose to feed raw or stick to the many commercial foods available, one thing everyone agrees on is the importance of controlling your dog’s weight. Obesity in dogs poses a significant risk to their health and can lead to damage to joints, bones and ligaments as well as heart disease and decreased liver function — if left unchecked. It is important to limit your dog’s food and increase their activity if they are obese and it is recommended that you visit your vet for advice.

Groom Your Dog Regularly

Keeping your pet clean and brushed makes it easier to check for lumps, bumps and parasites. As well as taking your dog to places like groomers in King of Prussia, regular grooming at home also allows you to remove dead hair, distribute oils and improve the bond between you and your pet.

Give Your Dog Plenty of Exercise

Inactivity in dogs can lead to both physical and mental illness. Dogs require walking at least once a day and you should be trying to think of stimulating games to play at home to help keep them entertained. Training not only ensures that your pet will be well mannered, safe and easy to keep, but it is also enjoyable and interesting for them too.

  2. Getting pet insurance is also a great idea as our pets need regular veterinary check ups just like we need regular doctor visits.

  3. These are all very important tips for keeping your pets healthy and happy! I always feel closer to my dogs after a good training or exercise session. It’s a great way to deepen the bond and trust between you both.
