The power of DreamWorks

What do Shrek, Antz, Chicken Run, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon all have in common? You guessed it. They’re all hit DreamWorks animations. The next movie to get the DreamWorks treatment is The Croods.

This movie differs slightly from previous DreamWorks animations as it features people. Not talking animals, ogres or aliens, but actual humans. Granted, they’re from the Stone Age, but they’re still people.

The Croods tells the story of the first people on the planet Earth. This family of cavemen are a loveable bunch, but they’re also rather cowardly. Family patriarch Grug is constantly preaching about the dangers of venturing outside the cave.

He warns the children that if they don’t listen to their father, they will end up like Crispy Bear… dead. Perhaps a little harsh, but when the over-protective dad is voiced by action movie god Nicolas Cage I wouldn’t expect much else.

Eep, the adventurous and curious daughter, wants to do just about everything that her father stands against. She’s an explorer. Early on in the trailer we see Eep trying to escape the cave and discover the outside world. That is until the cave comes crashing down and opens up the big bad scary world to the Croods family.

Grug takes it upon himself to search for a new family home, but along the way the Croods are open to new experiences, completely changing their perspective on life. The new creatures, plants and colours are all such a shock compared to the relative safety of their old home.

I’ve already mentioned Nicolas Cage, but he’s not the only famous name behind these pre-historic characters. Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds and Catherine Keener also feature.

I am really excited to see The Croods, as the co-writers and directors, Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders, have worked on some hit movies in the past.
