My Review

I have been a mom for almost eight years, and an Early Childhood Educator for over 15 years, so it would not be a understatement to say I have read A LOT of child development and parenting books over the years. From Dr. Sears to Dr. Phil, Bev Bos to Barbara Colorosso, there are experts on these topics everywhere.

Recently though I had the opportunity to read a gem of a parenting resource in The Happy Toddler.

This book is a wonderful resource for any parent, regardless of whether you are a first time parent or dealing with the “terrible two’s” for the fifth time over. The book is organized extremely well, making finding your topic of interest very easy. You don’t have to read this book cover to cover to realize what a great tool it is (although for the sake of review I did just that). The book is divided into eight sections, with two to nine chapters in each.

Here are the sections:

A. Understanding Your Toddler
B. Your Toddler’s Emotions
C. Language and Communication
D. Discipline
E. Common Behavioral Problems
F. Managing Everyday Routines
G. Planning and Managing Change
H. A Word for Parents

There is literally something for all caregivers in this book, whether you are the parent, grandparent, child care provider or friend. I believe this is a book that should be in the professional development resource library of every family child care program, day care or preschool, it is that good.

My favorite section was definitely the one on Discipline. it has TONS of ideas for discipline little ones without spanking, and gives a ton of tips and ideas, including a chart with typical responses in light of misbehavior and the types of discipline a parent or caregiver could use. In fact, the book has literally hundreds of tips and ideas for every parenting situation imaginable.

This book would be an ideal baby gift, baby shower gift and even a Christmas present for an expectant mom/dad.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
