Road Trip with Fido this Summer?

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR HOUND SAFE & SOUND

More than 37 million Americans took to the roads Memorial Day Weekend. And that’s just the start of summer travel season. Whether you’re going cross-country with your pet, for a Sunday drive, or to one of thousands of pet-friendly hotels, here are some ways to make sure your favorite pooch stays safe and happy.

A QUICK TRIP TO THE VET

If you’re planning on taking a long car trip, or even a week or two at the beach, let a vet check out your pet before the trip — that way you know Rover is in good shape to make the trip and stay healthy until your next regular check up. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends an annual pet check up, and other checkups before a longer trip or if your pet is under the weather.

PET TRAVEL KIT

If you remember to take snacks and water for yourself on a trip, make sure you pack up the same for your pet. You can put single serve food in plastic bags, bring along water and a small bowl, and even a pet first aid kit just in case of an accident on the road.

STRETCH THEIR FOUR LEGS

Our four-legged friends need a break from a car ride, too, so make sure you stop to walk them and for a potty break. Look for some grassy area that’s away from the road which lets them safely sniff around and get a change of scenery. A leash is a good idea on the road.

TAG YOUR PET

If you tag your luggage and travel with a driver’s license, you need to make sure your pet has the latest tags with current address, too. Or, consider a microchip, but the AVMA reminds us that a microchip only works if your pet information is up to date and registered. You never know, they might make a break for it in that petfriendly hotel at the beach or in the city, so keep Fido close at all times.
