I’m Failing at Potty Training!

It has been awhile since we last shared our potty training moments: hopes, dreams and fears. The last few weeks have been trying to say the least. Maybe summer in the city was just a bad choice to kick training up a notch, maybe it is just me {maybe I failed} and perhaps {and I hope} Mr. E is just taking his time getting use to the whole use the big boy potty idea.

Either way we have been steady with our remind to potty method every 30 minutes, with a short sit time on every hour when at home. Wow it is exhausting just thinking about it but we will remain on track.

The problem is handling training with summer activities. We go to the park, the pool, the movies, amusement parks, zoos and more. It is a lot of fun and since the school year means we really have to man the home front, it is important to maintain that free spirit during the summer months. It is hard though while training; for me at least it is. Even though I try to stick to the reminder schedule, it doesn’t always go as planned. Surprisingly when shopping he asked to go potty but not so willing when doing the fun stuff. It is almost if he doesn’t want to take a break from his playtime.

I would almost give in and not stress so much, BUT we have 3-year old pre-school coming in August and he has to be trained before attending. That added deadline is enough to make me go bald, I can only imagine what is going through his mind as I become a drill sergeant demanding his attention to the potty throne every half hour.

One of the few positive multi-uses we have found during our potty training venture is Mr. E’s love for Monsters U. We took him to see the film in theaters on opening day and one of the ads played before the movies was the Little Monster commercial. I was in awe because when the mom asks, “What Does a Little Monster Take? and my little guy screams for all to hear, “A Potty Break!” This marked a true proud mommy moment.

I use this Little Monster method about half the time for the 30 minute reminders and nearly always for the hour sit and try moments. If nothing else, this smart saying created by the Huggies Pull-ups team {combining laughs and scary monster faces} at least makes the moments fun, no matter if they are successful or not. It is a step in the right direction, helping me create happy, peaceful potty moments.

While I realize there are all kinds of parents out there, some much more skilled that I in the potty training department. For those of you who struggle as we do with a hard to train toddler, all I can say is hang in there. Eventually they will get it and this parenting moment will pass and we will get to break again. Don’t be too hard on yourself or your little one. Each of us, children included, are unique and do things at our pace and in our own way.

Wish us luck!
