Ditch the Gym: 5 Ways to Get Fit for Free

Going to the gym is a great way to stay fit and strong, but for many it’s just not their cup of tea and they find it either too hard to stay motivated, or too expensive to join. There are lots of other great ways to keep fit, but they don’t have to cost you.

Running

Running is fantastic cardio and it’s also a great way to see more of your own home town. Whether you run through the suburbs or find yourself a nature track, or even really challenge yourself by trying to beat your own time running up a mountain and back, there are lots of great ways to turn running into a fun way to explore, get out into nature, and get fit for free. You might even be able to find a running group who do a variety of different tracks together, or bring your partner or family along to get outdoors and get the blood pumping. It’s a great free fitness activity because you can do it anywhere, anytime, and all you need to get started is a comfy pair of shoes.

Cycling

Cycling is a special sport in that it’s low-impact, causing very little shock or stress on joints, bones and muscles. This makes it the ideal sport for people suffering from painful or weak joints, and those recovering from injuries.

It’s also wonderful in that you can quickly and easily make fitness a part of your every day routine by combining exercise and transport, as you can swap out your usual car-commute to work, uni, shops, social events etc with a bike ride instead. It’s excellent cardio and helps strengthen joints and muscles rather than straining them.

Beach Circuits

Another DIY fitness trend that seems to be taking off is beach circuits. You can create your own workout to do on the shore (and in the water if you’re a keen swimmer), where you’ve got much more space than at home, and the additional resistance of the sand under your feet. You can set yourself markers to run to, alternate between soft and hard sand, incorporate push ups, sit-ups, burpees, whatever suits you. It’s a very enjoyable way to work out and you can cool off with a swim afterwards. It’s totally customisable and completely free.

Swimming

Swimming is another excellent sport for all levels of fitness. When you’re in the water there is very almost no impact on joints and you’re not working against your own body-weight. It’s fantastic for respiratory health and it can provide a highly effective cardio workout. Plus it’s a great way to cool off in summer and can make working out much more enticing and much less sweaty.

Join a Team

Team sports are a fantastic way to get fit for many reasons. Firstly, they’re a lot of fun and you’ll find yourself looking forward to training and games instead of feeling like you have to force yourself into a workout. Being part of a team also means lots of positive reinforcement by your team members, and the extra motivation to show up each week because your team is depending on you.

Sometimes team sports aren’t 100% free, sometimes membership might cost a small fee but there are many free community supported programs.

These are just a few ideas of great fitness activities that you can do without having to fork out your hard earned cash. It’s all about finding the right fitness regime that you can enjoy and stick to without dreading each workout. Keep trying; you’re bound to find that perfect activity that you look forward to every day!
