As a mother of four I have always enjoyed watching my babies go from being exclusively breastfed to starting solid foods. It is an incredible transformation watching how their world expands with each bite of food. The responsibility, however, of feeding them nutritional meals can weigh heavy on a parent’s shoulders. The search for the healthiest, cleanest, purest and most delicious meal is ON – which is why I was excited to try Beech-Nut’s new flavors in their “just food” line of 100% natural whole vegetable and fruit purees. I accepted their #NotBabyFoodChallenge.
Our 7 month old recently started his quest for the perfect bite of food. We have now worked our way up to stage #2 baby food. At the store, the first thing I do when I inspect a potential new meal is to look at the list of ingredients. I want to see FOOD on there – JUST FOOD that I know, can pronounce and trust. Well – I recently found the answer to my hunt for a food worthy of my precious baby boy’s palette: Beech-Nut “Just Food” line! The ingredients listed on the back of their jars are exactly the same as the foods listed on the front – no more – no less. Incredibly impressive! The jar with “Just Sweet Potatoes” contains (drumroll, please): sweet potatoes – and that is IT! No preservatives, no added water or anything… I LOVE IT!

So how does this baby food taste, you might ask! Well, I put it to the test this weekend. I normally do taste the food before I feed it to the baby, however, this time I wanted to recruit the really picky eaters in the family. Our 2, 5 and 7 year olds were (unknowingly) volunteered to taste test the baby’s food. There is no one pickier in this world than a toddler and his five year old brother – NO ONE!
First I made my homemade Cheesy Pasta Bake, much like macaroni and cheese! I added half a jar (one serving) of “Just Carrots”, stage 1 to my list of ingredients. I thought the vibrant orange color of the baby food would blend well with the cheddar cheese in the boys’ favorite dinner. I am proud to say that everyone (including my husband) ate their entire dinner – without even noticing the carrots! The texture was smooth enough to fool my 7 year old – and he can normally detect the SLIGHTEST change in texture. I am normally not a big fan of “hiding food,” because I want the kids to consciously choose healthy foods. Seeing how they did not even notice the carrots because of the smooth texture and matching color, I may just have to rethink my decision not to sneak them healthy foods – they need the vitamins and it was so easy.
The next day for lunch, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were requested by all three of my older boys. I made a quick switch and put Beech-Nut’s “Beets, Pear and Pomegranate” on their sandwiches in place of the traditional sugar-filled jelly. The verdict was “Yummy, mama. Can I have another one?” I was floored – yet thrilled. The best part was that the ingredients in our new “jelly” is JUST beets, pear and pomegranate – no sugar, high fructose corn syrup, nope – just healthy vegetables and fruit!
So not only did the baby love his new flavorful variety of purees, his brothers who are picky eaters, texture sensitive and very particular about their flavors all loved the new and delicious Just food line from Beech-Nut. Score 1 for mama & Beech-Nut – a great team effort!
