Stay With Family Or Friends. Nobody likes to invite themselves to spend the night, but there are often offers of “if you are in town, stop and stay”. If you have friends or family along the way to your destination, or near your destination give them a call and see if you could stay with them. Make sure to be a good guest and clean up after yourself, respect their schedules (for sleep & work), and never forget a proper hostess gift.

Check Into A Hostel. Hostels may raise eyebrows, but if you are a single individual or couple planning a trip they can be a great choice. While some are family friendly, they aren’t always the best options when traveling with kids. If you are looking for a little fun experience and to meet new people, a hostel is a great choice.

Rent A House Or Condo. While more popular in tourist towns and resort communities than cities, renting a house or condo for a vacation is a great way to travel. Not only will you have more privacy in general, you will have a lot of the comforts of home you might miss. This is a great option for families traveling. The addition of a washer and dryer, stove, refrigerator and separate bedrooms can help make a family vacation much more fun and easy to navigate.

Check Out A Timeshare. While you may not want to buy into a timeshare yourself, you may be able to review one for a night or two free of charge. Listen to the presentation and check out the benefits and you may decide it’s a good option for your family. If you don’t want to buy one, but still want the benefits of staying in one, check with your friends, family or local to destination classifieds for rentals. Timeshare Rentals are often a great option that allows you a few perks without the long term commitment.

No matter where your destination, there are a ton of great alternative lodging options when traveling. Take into account the time you will be staying, your needs and the area you are staying in to make the best decision for you and your family. Choose a different type of accommodation each year until you find the one that is perfect for you!
