How to create The Perfect Baked Potato

This is a recipe for the ultimate baked potato that is very simple to make. This process allows the butter and cheese to be cooked in the potato as you bake it in the oven.  This makes it more flavorful and will spice up any dinner for you and your family.

*Preheat Oven to 450 degrees

  • One Large Potato (Or how many you will be cooking.)
  • Butter or Margarine
  • Cheddar Cheese
  • Bacon Bits
  • Sour Cream
  • Salt and Pepper


1)      Wash the potatoes in cold water to wash off all the dirt and grime from the potato.

2)      Dry off the potato.

Wash and Cut

3)      Begin cutting lines into the potato but be careful to not cut all the way through. You should be cutting them about ¼ inch apart from each other.

4)      This next step is where you can be a little bit more creative. In the slots you just cut you can place a small slice of cheese or butter. You can go all cheese, all butter or alternate. Its completely up to you.


5)      Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.

6)      Place the potato on a cookie sheet or pan and bake it for 40mins. *You can wrap the potato in tin foil if you would like. This will help the potato keep all the cheese and butter together.

7)      When you remove it from the oven the slots in the potato should have opened up a little bit more. You can add some shredded cheese on top and broil it for 1-3 minutes or until melted.

8)      Place your favorite baked potato toppings on it like bacon bits, sour cream and chill.  Enjoy!

    We make them the same way. They sure are good. When we have an outdoor fire my husband wraps it up in foil then puts the potato in a soup can and throws it in to bake.

    Potatoes can be very versatile in what you put on and in them plus how you cook them. Great idea about slicing them and putting the butter and cheese throughout. My husband would love this. It makes sense when you think about it…we do it with bread to bake.

    Wow, slicing it sideways is a great concept! I’m sure that help speed the cooking time as well. Susie normally cooks potatoes for well over an hour. You can speed it up (about 1/2 time) by putting it in in the microwave about 5 minutes. Another tip is to spray them with extra virgin olive oil and put some sea salt on the outside before you wrap them in tin foil and throw them on the grill (if you’re cooking something on the grill), or the oven if you’re just cooking inside. Wow that potato looks huge, if that is a full-size plate!

    This sounds so yummy, I love this way and have to try it. I may try it with real bacon and use as breakfast with eggs. I would also try different seasonings.     Looks really good. I use to make potatoes that way when I lived at home with my mother. Many many years ago. We don’t eat a lot of potatoes because of high cholesterol but when we do we eat them baked and I slice them because they don’t take as long to cook. My husband eats a potato with nothing at all on it. I on the other hand eat it with lots of butter and cheese. That is why I don’t eat them very often.
