8 Great Road Trip Games For Kids

When you start planning a family road trip, one of the first things that comes to mind is how to keep the kids occupied for hours in the car. While video games, movies and music are all options, there will be times when you need a little something different for the kids to do to stay occupied. Here are some great road trip games for kids that include some fun old school games as well as little items to buy and bring along.

8 Great Road Trip Games For Kids

I Spy: This classic game is perfect for long road trips.  It keeps kids busy looking outside the car to find everything on their list.  Type up a sheet for each kid before your trip that has 20-50 unique things that you think may be seen on your trip.  Things like older car styles, colors of cars, pets in passenger seats, tractors on the side of the road, etc.

Look For State License Plates: See how many states license plates you can spot during a specific amount of time.  If you are an hour from your destination, this is a great contest to occupy kids and kill time at the end of a long day.

Practice Spelling With Magnets: Pack a bag of magnetic alphabet letters and a small cookie sheet for kids to have fun spelling different words you see along the way.  You can challenge them to spell something you see ahead of you without looking to see for themselves.

Make Cereal Necklaces: Pack snack baggies with their favorite cereal that will slide onto a piece of yarn.  Cheerios, etc. are great for this. Have lengths of yarn already cut and packed in the bags.  Let them string them onto the yarn and tie off then wear and eat as a road trip snack.

Play Road Trip Bingo: Check out one of these fun vacation games to help you create a road trip Bingo game for your kids.

Color Your Own Paper Dolls: With dozens of great places online to print coloring pages of girls and boys, you can pack the crayons, colored pencils or markers along with some craft sticks and glue to make their own fun paper doll puppets.

Play 20 Questions: Let them ask you any 20 questions they want.  You have to answer as honestly as possible, even if it is an awkward question.  Let the kids take turns or each go through all of their questions at once.

Pack Portable Games: There are tons of cool travel sized games of the classics like Battleship, Connect 4 and more! Pack a few of these fun travel games for the kids to play each other in the back seat.

The most important part of traveling with kids is to always be prepared.  Make sure to have all of their favorite movies, music and games along for the ride to make time fly by easily.  Always plan a few fun stops along the way to help them burn off some of that energy.
