National Blueberry Month: Recipe Round-up

If you were going to guess the two most popular berries in the United States, what would you say? If you guessed strawberries and blueberries, you are correct! More than 500 million pounds of blueberries are harvested each year. That’s alot of blueberries. Whether you like to eat blueberries by the handful, drop them in your cereal, sprinkle them on salad or use them to create a mouth watering dessert, we can all agree that blueberries rule the summer table!

Blueberries have been a part of US culture from the early days. Native Americans used them to treat coughs and other illnesses, pioneers used them to dye clothes and even paint their shelters. Even early American poet Robert Frost loved blueberries so much that he wrote a poem aptly named “Blueberries”:

By Robert Frost
1874-1963“You ought to have seen what I saw on my way
To the village, through Mortenson’s pasture to-day:
Blueberries as big as the end of your thumb,
Real sky-blue, and heavy, and ready to drum
In the cavernous pail of the first one to come!”

If you live in Minnesota you can claim the blueberry muffin as your official state muffin and residents of New Jersey claim the berry as their official state fruit. Obviously people love their blueberries. So if you are fortunate enough to know where to go pick fresh blueberries, go grab your bucket and get picking. If you don’t have access to picking them fresh, head out to your local Farmer’s Market and stock up on some blueberries and try out these recipes.
